Halloween 2009

Just a couple of shots from Halloween day/night 2009. We started off the afternoon with a party at our friends, the Snyder's home, and then we finished the night with trick-or-treating around the neighborhood. Sadly Mike had to work a shift at the local ER so he was not able to participate in any of the fun but Tatum had a great time and she received a lot of delicious candy. Tatum did spend much of the day confused because of all of the scary masks and silly noises and it is apparent in many of the pictures.

Halloween Parade at School

On Friday the preschool hosted its first Halloween Parade rather than just having the typical in-class parties. The kids had a chance to trick-or-treat around the school before heading out and walking around the block. Many of us mom's were on-hand with camera's to snap some pictures of the little ones as they marched around.

Tatum Starts Preschool!

It is hard to believe that Tatum is big enough to start preschool but now that she is two she gets to go to "school" twice weekly. She thoroughly enjoys her time at school which includes such activities as art, music, outside play, snack time, and lunch time. Here are a couple of pictures of her first day:

Tatum Turns 2!

It is hard to believe, but Tatum turned 2 on October 17th! We decided to head to Shenandoah with some friends in order to celebrate this special event. We stayed in a lodge in a small town called Sperryville right outside of Shenadoah National Park. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate great and our hiking consisted of walking through some pretty thick fog. Day 2 was slightly better weather along the Sky Line Drive, but that depended on the altitude and how far North we were. The Northern third of the park was closed because of snow! However, we were able to drive the lower 2/3 and saw some amazing views of the moutains in near peak fall colors. After the events of the past few weeks, it was a welcome getaway and Tatum seemed to enjoy "Doah" as she calls it.

It was the perfect Fall weather this weekend in Virginia, so we decided to head out to the Hunt Club Farm in Virginia Beach to tour the pumpkin patch and to do some fall activities. Tatum's favorite part of the day was the petting zoo and riding the pony, Thunder, a 13-year old miniature horse.

Fall Vacation Week

After a rough few months of getting back into the daily grind of residency and the associated hardships, Lindsey, Tatum, and I were in need of a fall vacation!

Our first stop was to the Twin Cities in order to visit the Tomczyks. It was a relaxing and child friendly visit with many fun activities including: The Como Zoo in St. Paul and apple picking in an orchard outside of Minneapolis.

This was Tatum's second time apple picking, but last fall she was a much more passive participant than this year! Tatum was determined to get her money's worth however, and she probably sampled approximately 10 apples with a bite and then a throw!

After our trip to the Midwest, Tatum enjoyed her last free airplane ride back to Norfolk where Grandma Liz met up with us in order to babysit Tatum while we went to Tara and Andrew's wedding in Philadelphia. Lindsey and I serendipitously introduced Tara and Andrew shortly after moving to Maine in the spring of 2007 where we shared a wonderful 2 years with them before we all moved this past spring. We had the pleasure of being joined by my brother, as he has known Andrew since kindergarten and had the honor of being a groomsman.

Well it is official...Tatum will be a big sister and we are soon to be a family of 4! We could not be happier with this wonderful news. Be looking for more updates to come as Baby Smiley #2 grows and we learn his/her gender. April Fool's Day here we come!

Labor Day Weekend in Baltimore

It has been way too long since we've updated the blog, so we figured it was finally a good time after getting away for a family weekend in Baltimore.

Baltimore is a relatively short 4 hour drive from us in Norfolk. Tatum didn't seem to think so, however, and she repeatedly asked us if she could "walk" the whole drive up there. That was both frustrating and funny at the same time.

Once in Baltimore, we made the most of our 48 hours. We got last minute tickets to an Orioles game at Camden Yards, which wasn't too difficult considering they are last place in the NL East. It was a very nice ballpark and despite their record, it was nice to see the Baltimore faithful present and cheering on their team. Tatum also participated in the cheering and kept yelling "catch it".

Following the game we met up with some friends who drove up from D.C. for dinner in the historic neighborhood of Federal Hill.

The following day we had tickets for the National Aquarium, which was worth the drive in itself. In addition to the many exhibits, we had tickets for the dolphin show and the 4-D Planet Earth: Shallow Seas movie experience. Tatum enjoyed the dolphin show immensely, but the 4-D immersion experience may have been a little too intense as she cried during it. Still, it was a good experience. In addition to this, we went down to Little Italy for treats and also tried out a famous pizza place that has been open since the 1940's. The day was capped off by some free time in the playground on top of the scenic vantage point Federal Hill. Tatum was able to get enough energy released that she slept for 12 straight hours!
